What Should Buyers Ask About Outsourced Surface Finishing for CNC Parts?

Finishing is often the last major process before shipment. That makes it easy to overlook during supplier selection and painful to correct when the color, thickness, corrosion resistance or masking is wrong.

Why outside finishing needs control

Many factories use qualified partners for anodizing, electroplating, polishing or coating. That does not automatically create a problem. The risk comes when the outside step is invisible: no approved specification, no sample, no batch record and no clear responsibility when the result is out of range.

Factory scenario: the finish passed visually but failed at assembly

A finish can look attractive and still create trouble. Extra coating on a mating surface may affect fit. Poor masking may block a threaded hole. A color can match under one light and differ under another. These are process-control issues, not simply cosmetic complaints.

Questions worth asking

  • What exact finish standard and color reference are being used?
  • Which areas must be masked?
  • What thickness, adhesion, hardness or corrosion test is required?
  • How are parts handled and protected after finishing?
  • Are finish samples approved before the production lot?
  • Who reviews the report and releases the shipment?

At Nbfeiyu, the finish route is reviewed with the part function in mind. The correct choice may be anodizing, plating, polishing, e-coating or another route depending on the material and service environment.

Buyer checklist

  • Put the finish requirement on the drawing or purchase specification.
  • Identify cosmetic and functional surfaces separately.
  • Approve a reference sample under agreed lighting.
  • Define inspection and test records before production.
  • Ask for packaging protection between the factory and destination.

FAQ

Is a color photo enough to approve a finish?

Usually not. Photos help communication, but a physical reference or defined instrument and standard are more reliable.

Can the machining supplier manage finishing?

Yes, if the supplier owns the specification, partner control and final acceptance rather than simply passing along an outside result.
