EDM Method Selection

What is Sinker EDM used for?+

Sinker EDM is used for mold inserts, die components, blind cavities, deep internal features, sharp details and hardened conductive materials that are difficult to machine by conventional cutting.

What is the difference between Sinker EDM and Wire EDM?+

Sinker EDM uses a shaped electrode to form blind cavities and internal details. Wire EDM uses a moving wire for through-cut profiles and tight 2D contours.

Can Sinker EDM create blind cavities?+

Yes. Blind cavities are one of the core reasons to choose Die Sinker EDM, Ram EDM or Plunge EDM for mold and tooling components.

What materials can be machined by Sinker EDM?+

Sinker EDM can machine conductive metals including tool steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, carbide, titanium, copper, brass and other conductive materials reviewed by drawing.

Can Sinker EDM machine hardened steel?+

Yes. Sinker EDM is well suited for hardened tool steel and heat-treated components because the process removes material by electrical discharge rather than cutting force.
