Why a STEP File Alone Is Not Enough for an OEM CNC Quote
A 3D model is useful and often essential. The problem starts when it is treated as the entire specification. Two suppliers can open the same file and quote different processes, different inspection levels and different risks.
What the model does not always tell the shop
A STEP file may not clearly state whether a dimension is critical, whether a surface is cosmetic, or whether a hole needs a particular finish. It may also omit material condition, hardness, coating thickness, edge-break requirements and packaging expectations. Those omissions become assumptions inside the quote.
Factory scenario: the same geometry, different risk
We have seen parts where the model looked straightforward, but the drawing later added a tight positional tolerance at an assembly interface. That single requirement changed the fixture approach and the inspection method. The first quote was not wrong for the information available; it was incomplete because the requirement had not been released.
The minimum RFQ package
- Current 3D model with a clear revision.
- 2D drawing with datums, tolerances and critical features.
- Material grade and required condition.
- Surface finish, coating or plating specification.
- Annual volume, order quantity and expected repeat frequency.
- Inspection report, sample approval and traceability requirements.
- Packaging, labeling and delivery destination.
When the package is complete, the factory can compare machining, laser cutting, welding, molding or a combined route on the same basis.
Buyer checklist
- Confirm the model and drawing carry the same revision.
- Mark functional interfaces and cosmetic surfaces.
- State which dimensions require a report.
- Do not hide a finish requirement in an email attachment.
- Ask the supplier to list assumptions and exclusions in the quotation.
FAQ
Can a supplier quote from a STEP file?
Yes, but the quote may need assumptions or a qualification note. A firm production price should wait for the missing requirements.
Should buyers send the drawing before discussing price?
For custom parts, yes. A short drawing review usually prevents a longer argument after the order is placed.
